Are y'all following the indefinite strike by Asha workers?
In Kerala, Asha workers have launched an indefinite strike which has entered its third week. These are women mostly from lower middle class families, demanding at least an honorarium at par with minimum pay. Though the union government envisioned them as "activists" doing "voluntary work" over three or four days a week, now they have to spend at least eight hours daily. Then there are emergency calls in the night to attend. They have to do rounds in the panchayat. There are only 26,000+ Asha workers for 900+ grama panchayats in Kerala. Imagine around 28 workers having to meet over 20,000 people. So much walking. And for all that work they get an honorarium of just Rs 7000. Way way below the minimum wages. https://kafila.online/2025/02/23/support-the-asha-workers-strike-in-kerala-an-appeal-to-womens-organisations-and-trade-unions-althea/ Have you been following this?2
