Can i pray without idol?

Hi so i live alone in a PG. recently i started getting a lot of impure bad thoughts( s\*x related) and i noticed that it is taking a toll on my life. I used to pray back at home with family. I tried to listen to bhajan and do chants of hare raam and it gave me calmness. now i thought maybe i should do puja everyday too. but i dont have any idols here and i dont think i can get one. so can i do puja without idol like sitting in a dedicated place. reading spiritual books like hanuman chalisa and sundarkan and bowing to bhagwan. is that enough? I actually tried it today and it felt very good, i feel like a different person. but did i do it wrong is it necessary to follow the procedure like have an idol do teeka and diya etc?
