ADAS - forward auto braking

This was my first time when ADAS forward auto break kicked in and brought my vehicle to a full halt. I was completely aware of the situation and this unexpected abrupt breaking could have led to a rear end collision. Thankfully no one was behind me. As the breaking was sudden, my partner and I got a bit scared on what just happened. What are your thoughts on forward auto breaking?
