Waiting at the red light
I was on my motorcycle, exhausted. My friend sat behind me with no expression. Co-branded bags slung over our shoulders clasping at the back. We desperately waited for the red light to finally turn green. It seemed like forever. Some vehicles switched off, while others remained idling. I just wanted to drop my friend off on the way and go home. Sheer and utter stench of piss and shit wafted straight to my nostrils. I cringed. Not wanting to say anything to my pillion rider, for he's a street pisser himself. Why do people pee and shit in public? I thought. To my chagrin, a dude started to move towards the wall and positioned himself to perform the deed. My eyes widened in disbelief, I snapped my head to find my expressionless friend again. Of course, any kind of reaction would have been a contradiction on his part. I knew that. Amidst all this, a young woman in tattered clothes made her rounds, moving from vehicle to vehicle and peddling balloons, toy animals and other things. A baby cradled in her arms. Surprisingly calm in such a chaotic atmosphere. I felt bad for the baby. It was my turn. I groped desperately in my pocket, feeling around for change. I didn't wanna stand awkwardly in case the light turned green at that exact moment. "Change illa" I said in an elevated voice. The woman maintained her neutral and tired expression. She accepted and moved on to the next vehicle. My friend said something I couldn't quite catch. Meanwhile, engines started to roar all around me. The light had turned green.1
