Got Sedated and Robbed off everything on a A/C Sleeper Bus During Tirupati Darshan
I want to share my unsettling experience to warn others, especially when traveling on long-distance buses like the A/C buses used for packages such as the Tirupati Darshan from Udupi. During the darshan while waiting in queue, I noticed this guy — a chubby fat uncle , probably in his late early 50s in formal shirt and dhoti. He had a large build and was standing right behind me. We had been standing in the queue for nearly 2 hours already and then this guy standing behind me kept his hands on my shoulders. I ignored for sometime, thinking he will remove his hands once he gets a wall to support himself. The guy did not remove it for some time. And pls note that I was already super tired and groggy as I did not sleep well the other night. He kept pushing me and eventually I told him to hold onto some support nearby, but he insisted there was no space and that I should "adjust." When I offered him the bar beside him to hold, he scolded me, saying, “Kids these days have no respect for elders.” He made me feel guilty for even suggesting such a thing, so I apologized and let it go. He continued talking to me, engaging me in small talk, and eventually told me I reminded him of his son by lifting my chin up. I ignored him at first, but he kept going on, so I reluctantly started speaking with him more casually. Soon, I relaxed, let my guard down, and continued chatting. I learned that he was also on the same AC bus that would be taking us back to Bangalore that evening and then to Udupi overnight. After a visit to Tirupati, we had some lunch, and left for the bus. This time, he sat beside me on the bus for the return journey and got chatting with me again. Once we reached Bangalore, had light dinner and switched buses to go to Udupi and of course he sat beside me again. On the way, he offered me some Tirupati ladoo that he purchased earlier. I politely refused at first, but he insisted in a friendly way saying its tradition that we need to eat the ladoo on the day of darshan, even opening my mouth and feeding me the ladoo. Then he remarked that I was very obedient, and let out a laugh and offered me some water as I gulped down the sweet. I took a sip, still trying to process how strange the whole thing felt. And that's when it hit me — I started feeling really drowsy. It didn’t make sense at first, but I could feel myself getting more and more tired, heavy and drowsy, like I was fighting to stay awake. Before I knew it, I was out cold. I don't even remember when exactly I fell asleep, but when I woke up, it was like I’d been in a deep, deep sleep. When I woke up, about 10 hours had passed, and the bus was just approaching the stop. I felt groggy, disoriented, and noticed that the man was nowhere to be seen. That’s when it hit me – I had been robbed. My gold chain, 2 rings, bracelet, watch, mobile and 4000 rs cash were all swindled off as I slept soundly. I filed a complaint on this later that day, but I want to share this experience with you all as a cautionary tale. **Please be vigilant** when you're traveling in such crowded, long-distance settings. It only takes a moment of lowered guard and a smooth talker to end up in this situation. Keep your valuables close, and don't trust anyone who makes you feel too comfortable, especially when you're traveling alone. Stay safe, everyone.2
