Almost got scammed in guwahati
So today I was walking back to my pg and got approached by a dude holding helmet near the Bhangagarh flyover. He appeared to be around late teens to early 20s and had a very clear and almost charming way of speaking. He approached me talking in Hindi, he asked "excuse me, app yaha se ho kya" to which I replied that I'm not(which I realise is probably a dumb thing to do). He followed up with "aap meri ek help kar sakte ho kya". This immediately raised red flags in my mind because around 1.5 months ago I was approached in the exact same manner, these two lines were repeated almost verbatim and he was even holding a helmet, but I was in a hurry back then so I dismissed the conversation pretty quickly. Anyway, back to this encounter, he told me that he had run out of petrol in his scootie and pointed to a scootie parked there. His mother's phone number was switched off for some reason, he had no one to ask for help. He told me he was in Guwahati for physics wallah coaching for NEET, I'm also currently in guwahati for NEET coaching so I kinda started feeling bad for his situation. I asked him if he had no money in his gpay, he told me he had only 1 rupees which was the second red flag. It's extremely weird for someone who's a long way from home for coaching to have no money in his bank account in the middle of January. He asked me for 160 rupees and said he would pay me back 200 when he got home. I asked him how he was going to pay me to which he said that he would go home and ask one of the guys from his pg to gpay me. I asked him why can't he just ask for money from them and pay them back later to which he said that he didn't have their number. I was still willing to give him the benifit of the doubt since I live in a pg and I have none of my neighbour's number either. I told him that if he provided me with his coaching ID, I'd consider helping him out to which he replied that he left his id card in his wallet which he currently didn't have. I asked him for a photograph of it, just anything, even a photograph in physics wallah uniform would do and he started aimlessly scrolling in his gallery and told me he couldn't find anything. I finally asked him to atleast show me the WhatsApp group for his coaching barch(every coaching batch has their own whatsapp group) and he told me that there was no whatsapp group. He told me that he will call his friend who is also and coaching student and he would confirm his identity for me and at that point I asked him why can't he just ask for money from his friend then, he got tongue tied and couldn't even come up with a proper excuse, he told me his friend had no money. I just said sorry, ask somebody else and left. Have any of you run across this type of scam before?2
