Do you think India will ever develop outside of religion?

With no disrespect to anyone's religious sentiments, I feel our country is majorly driven by religious beliefs and I feel that the extremes of this really hampers our potential as a country. Maybe call it cons of secularism or to an extent cons of being a democracy. Does anyone see a change in the society, which maybe I am ignorant to, which can actually shape things up for the better? I don't really blame any political parties because politics feed on public emotions. I don't really see a future where we will ever get out of this situation until there is a significant drastic development which can maybe unite the country as a whole. Please offer your perspective.
