And for Jati, it is not part of Hinduism. The reason it is mentioned in so many texts is cause it was the social structure in ancient India. (it still is, but very scarcely). The core Hindu beliefs were just applied to the social structure. So if Jati is not being practised where you live, you don't need one. Also, it's not something you convert to. It's based on your lineage and ancestry.

And for the temples, god is everywhere and in everything. It's just that in temples, a certain aspect of god is concentrated and consecrated onto an idol or an object. You can pray at your home but visit the temple maybe once a month.

And no, u do not need any documents or name changes to turn Hindu. It's not and institution like the catholic church. It's just a way of life.
