A Genz kid want to know whether I can support periyar or not?
I am gen z too, here is my 2 cents. Don't follow any particular ism and don't idolize any single person.
Un munnorgal ah vida, un saastharatha vida un arivu perusu adha nambu - Periyar. Follow that.
1) Periyar was a rebel IMO. He was not a reformist in the classical sense. He was that guy who stood against the status quo of his times, he can neither be clubbed with a Narayan Guru or Raja Ram Mohan Roy nor be clubbed with a revolutionist like Ambedkar. But then at the end of it he was kinda both at times. But Kezhavan didn't work with an end goal, that is the sole reason why DMK was formed ( also because Anna found out that Atheism won't work with this tharkuri samoogam). He wasn't a Karl Marx or Budha, he didn't have answers, he just revolted.
2) Yes, he had said some stupid stuff and have had some contradicting views. Infact every leader and every reformist, revolutionary are the same. It is human to be hypocrites. The RW and NTK zo(oo)mbies quote these things to nullify what he had contributed to the society. The DMK oopees too come up with thalay suthi mooka thodrathu kinda muttu to justify periyar. Both are wrong, you want to know about why he did or said certain things, read it for yourself. His language might be rude but he had a point.
AFAIK he was always against the status quo, he fought for women against the patriarchy, he fought Brahminism for the oppressed class, hefought Hindi for Tamil. If he was alive today, he would be fighting for LGBTQ maybe. -

You getting into this will only mess your life further -

I am bad with these terms so I assume you must be in your teens or in your twenties.
Before getting into Periyar, look at our society and compare it with other societies across the world.
In most of the modern societies, women have equal rights. They can choose their careers, their partners, their lifestyles. They don't get bashed because they have chosen career over family, they don't get sexually abused for wearing non-traditional outfits, they don't get called sluts because they have had partners before marriage.
Likewise, in most of the modern societies, the discrimination is pretty non-existent or well hidden. You would rarely see a person of color being not hired because they are not white.
And why do these things (equality for all genders and anti-discrimination) have become so common in the west? For a simple reason, someone started pointing these things out. There has been a huge wave of cultural revolution and now, these matters are settled.
But, here in India, we are still at the phase 1. Someone did point out (Periyar, Anna, Ambedkar,..) but we are not ready for a cultural revolution. We are way too attached with the way of our living. Personally, I used to be a sanghi and I slowly transitioned into a dravidian, and it is not a simple task. You need to question your entire surroundings, your family and even your gods.
Sometimes this questioning needs to be done in a hard way (like ripping a bandage off, you see). And that's what Periyar did, he didn't care about your feelings, he wanted you to see beyond. Even beyond him, something which the religion and the culture don't really allow.
This comment is already getting long. So I am not even entering into the terrain of comparing our scientific and technological advancements and western ones.
Just ask questions ;) and who knows, you could even become a bigger man than Periyar and Anna themselves. -
What is the weirdest dream you ever had about Tata Motors?
