People who are left behind due to social discrimination should be given a headstart, today thats in the form of reservation.

There is an amnesia about what happened when casteism was at peak (still at peak in many rural india), and it was just 1 generation ago.

Now this is just my opinion that people who are victim of reservation exist surely but when you compare with reserved class, you cant deny that there is a huge difference. People with very personal and anecdotal experience just blame reservation while knowingly and unknowingly forgetting about past.

I would say give people headstart based on economic status and instead of answering if we should remove reservation we should ask why not removing the caste system altogether? Then many people wont agree to this because they would like to be in hierarchical caste system where they are above someone else just by birth.

Odia Brahmin here. Giving gold to the daughter in law is definitely a part of our culture. In fact, it’s not just the grooom’s parents who give gold to the daughter in law, but also groom’s relatives (buas, taayi, chaachi, mausi etc) usually also give gold to her. The parents usually give gold during nirbandha (Odia engagement) and the wedding day. The other relatives usually give gold on the chouthi function, which is the 4th day after wedding.

So it’s very weird that his parents are saying that gold is not part of Odia weddings. I am married to a Punjabi Khatri and my husband is always surprised to see how much gold is gifted in Odia culture in all marriages.

Frankly this seems like his parents do not accept you as their own and are using gold as a way to control the situation in their favor or cause unnecessary rifts.
