Chauburji is located on Lahore’s Multan Road at the intersection of Bahawalpur Road, which leads south towards Multan. It was once the gateway to an extensive garden that existed during the Mughal era. This "Gateway of the Four Minarets," or Chauburji, was originally the entrance to one of Lahore’s many pleasure gardens. The garden, along with one of the gate's northwest minarets, was lost to flooding but later restored by the Department of Archaeology. It was recently decorated with a faience mosaic. Once one of the largest Mughal gardens in Lahore, an inscription on the gateway records its establishment in 1646, during the reign of Shah Jahan, by a lady described as Sahib-e-Zebinda Begum-e-Dauran, or ‘the elegant lady of the age’. This lady is likely Jahan Ara Begum, the eldest and favorite daughter of Shah Jahan, who was known to have built gardens in Lahore. The gateway is beautifully decorated with rich mosaic work.
