The problem with aging phones is (surprise) an aging battery. The voltage of the battery is directly responsible for the clock speed of the system. Lower voltage, lower speed - it’s physics, not the update.

Just get the battery replaced, and update as long as updates are offered.

For Macs it is slightly different, because even MacBooks will often operate on a power supply. When it is charged, power switches over to a bypass, fueling the CPU directly. There the battery status plays no role for system speed.
