I'll give you an example why. I live in a colony where the majority of people are Hindu/Marathas. We had a muslim family that has been living here for decades, even before I was born.

Still to this day, everyone refers to them as Musalmaan and not by their last-name, even the people who moved here very recently refer to them as Musalmaan/another derogatory term and treat the Muslim family like an outsider. People don't go in their house for chai/nashta because they believe that these guys are unhygienic (they aren't), I've even heard some people say shit like there's a weird smell in their house of chicken and mutton and that their shelves are greasy and sticky (just like it's in a slaughterhouse), when it isn't. Of course people weren't asshole to their faces but it was apparent enough for them to feel alienated. Around 3 years ago this muslim family rented out the house and bought a new place where other muslims live.

However subtle it may be, people do pick up on discrimination and inherent biases, and feel unwelcomed. Therefore they tend to go with people who 'feel' familiar to them. I'm SURE every once in a while someone around you would have cracked a nepali/momos joke about a north eastern guy and as harmless as it may sound and how discrete you feel like you're being, it's easy to pick up on and feel distanced.

Also, they have much more common things with the people from their region and the language/social barrier is withdrawn.
