>The persistent traffic congestion at Sreekaryam junction will soon be a thing of the past with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurating construction of the much-touted flyover, which is expected to decongest traffic along one of the busiest stretches in the city.

>Speaking after inaugurating the construction of the flyover, the Chief Minister said the work on the project would be carried out with an eye on the light metro project planned in the city.The light metro project is one of the most important projects discussed in connection with the development of the capital city. So the flyover project is conceived taking into account the upcoming light metro project, said Mr. Vijayan. The final design of the light metro project is being prepared.

>The Chief Minister also said that these kinds of projects were imperative for the development of the State, and it is through such projects that the State will grow in tune with the times. It is also important that everyone should feel the taste of development, he said.

>The Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) funded project is estimated to cost a total of ₹177 crore including land acquisition costs. The four-lane bridge will be 535 metres long and have a width of 7.5 metres. There will be 5.5-metre-wide service roads on both sides and 1.5-metre-wide footpaths on both sides of the service road. The work will be completed in 18 months.Public Works Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas, who presided over the function, said that the government is committed to doing everything possible in the field of infrastructure development.

>Realising the importance of bridges, this government, which came to power in 2021, had decided to complete works related to 100 bridges within five years, and the State could complete these works in just three and a quarter years, he said.

>Though the inauguration of the construction of the flyover was planned for January 1, it was postponed following the demise of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is the agency that was entrusted with the light metro rail project, while Kochi-based Cherian Varkey Constructions Ltd is the contractor of the flyover project. Similarly, a total of 168 buildings were razed as part of the flyover project after acquiring around 1.34 hectares of land from 168 private parties in Cheruvakkal, Ulloor, and Pangappara villages.
