Donald Trump and his ilk win because 30% of Americans who can vote do not. And this is not just a “Republicans did this” - it’s a direct result of a two party system that prioritizes party survival over literally everything else, including the democratic system.

There is anecdotal data to show that the reason why people do not vote is because they do not believe that the options they have are meaningful or represent their beliefs. This serves the party preservation crowd just fine.

If we want to see democracy in the US thrive, then those 30% have to come out and vote, for whoever it is, and that impact on the system has to be felt. Otherwise we’re not in a real democracy. And both parties have incentives to depress the vote - and given that there are only two viable parties, it seems pretty obvious that low turnout is something that tends to serve both of them at different times.
