1. Auto licenses / badges require bribes.
2. Most autos are owned by loan sharks who require a daily rental and an increased weekend rental.
3. Auto metered pricing is set by Govt, and no auto driver can break-even on it if he does not own his auto (which they never do)
4. All auto drivers pay a monthly fee to join a union. The unsaid task of a union is to support local political rallies and specific parties for money. Do election canvassing etc. They are their BTL agencies. Sometimes the union also collects funds for parties.
5. In addition, the unions also provide local muscle for politicians without consequences for the drivers or their vehicles.


The entire system works only if the auto drivers overcharge customers and make money. In return, the political system was supposed to ensure total monopoly in transport for them (the only alternative being buses, trains and private taxis -which are unaffordable hourly rentals).


Emergence of ride hailing apps has broken this system. And it cannot be reversed. For every complaining auto driver, there will be at least be another driver who relies on the app for rides.


I have travelled in at least 10 autos the last month, which were new autos where the drivers started their day-one with ride hailing apps only.
