Actually, I don't agree. Not just Punjabi but everyone who migrate must learn the local language. Fun fact it's not something you've to try, just need to be open minded and remove the wall of your bias.
So speaking their own language is not good for them as they will never be able to connect properly with others in the area.

Agree with this. But for a broader reason. Uttarakhandis and himachalis are hypocrites. They feel ashamed in front of main landers, learn Hindi for them but also supress the minorities in Uttarakhand(example jaunsari and jadhi) and force them to speak only in Garhwali or kumaoni.

Solution:
As rightly said by you, Don't be an idiot like Kannadigas. It's impossible for tourists to learn other languages, do treat them with respect(which you're great at).
However, if you see migrant staying here from several years, there's no point speaking in Hindi with them.
