My mom performed Bihu dance last year at multiple malls all throughout Bangalore as part of the Assam association cultural awareness programs. Plus a lot of my friends here know Bihu and Mekhela Sador and all that.

Whereas some of my cousins who grew up and lived in Assam all their lives don’t know even that Bangalore is in Karnataka or that Karnataka’s common language is Kannada.

I’m shocked that still we don’t have any widespread PSAs/education campaigns against taking pictures/videos without consent. In this age, it’s something basic that should be taught in all schools and put up in ads everywhere. I know this wouldn’t have stopped the accused from doing what he did. But I’ve noticed that we, as a society, are so accustomed and comfortable with anyone taking pictures of anyone! It’s just so accepted. We never intervene even if we see it. Whereas if we see someone stealing something from another person, we do intervene. But these two situations are quite comparable in the digital age! Our body and face are our private entities that shouldn’t be photographed without consent.

I understand it may not have changed the minds of the 64 disgusting people but at least would have given the girl and other such victims, courage to go directly to the police (maybe it’s wishful thinking…). Just breaks my heart that this poor child had to carry this burden for so long. I hope she’s protected and treated for her traumas! 🤍
