I read up on colonial repercussions in a society - sociological and psychological context. And I can almost guarantee that we don’t have an identity. Our youth I mean.

It was stripped away. We have an idea of the identity that we hold dearly. But it’s an idea. The pre colonial innovation, parenting, teaching, art and expression has been wiped. Completely.

We were thrown into a survival state. Our self image shattered. Parents no longer knew how to parent. Indians in general didn’t know who they were. Because pre-independent India was not India to begin with. Identity crisis runs deep.

Now couple that with today’s western influence on society. Their prevalence, their dominance. It’s almost impossible for you not to be ridiculed for holding on to the idea of ‘Indian identity’. Because there isn’t any. We have fragments of it - biggest fragment being language. So speak your mother tongue as much as possible. Thats the closest link we have with our ancestors. But the other pieces of our culture is vastly incomplete.

So this cultural shift is inevitable. Your kids and their kids will be more American than they are ‘Indian’.

It’s a hot take but the Brits from the 18th century didn’t just loot our wealth. They looted our memory. Our knowledge. And our sense of self.

In a way, they fulfilled what they wanted to. As Lord Macaulay in 18th century said: *”we must create a class of persons who are Indian by blood and color, but English in morals, taste and opinions.”*
