I did a startup in '04 with someone who had the idea that I technically implemented ... they didn't have the words then, but what you'd call a technical co founder today. Same kind of stuff, emotional, narcissistic, total focus on him and what it means to him and yadda yadda.

I stayed almost 5 years, we got to 7MM yoy, I did well with bonus and the like, but the stock never materialized. He started hiring friends from his past, and in 6 months I got a call from the Police saying I have equipment that needs to be returned. Dude didn't even call me, just the police ... matter of fact my IDs were cutoff and no access to email and whatnot.

Thank God I was the technical founder, and had super access for everything I needed to get a lawyer and force a settlement. I never did get the stock, but dude showed his colors. The 'board' pushed him out maybe a year or so later.

I learned a lot, and I know how to handle this situation now, so it was an expensive lesson ... but one I've made use of. In the end, I absolutely now choose to never work with assholes. Once they expose themselves, they have determined the outcome.
