Politicians make a lot of irresponsible comments, so we need not take anything on face value. There are many who prefer a foreign language (English) over an Indian one for official communications.

Sanskrit may not be used at a day to day level, but most Indian languages are descended from it, so it never really disappeared.

Coming to the question of preserving it: we definitely should. Our ancient texts are all in Sanskrit. If we lose it, we completely lose our heritage. No society ever prospered by forgetting or discarding its heritage.
