India as a whole in 90s was very different. In 1995, the economic reforms were just 4 years old, satellite TV was in its infancy, mobile had just launched, and mass internet was still years away.

Moreover, people who made movies weren't that tuned to international fashion trends. I would say, it's only from late 90s that Bollywood began to have better aesthetics in terms of what actors began wearing onscreen. I think Dil Chahta Hai, was pioneer in that, it had lead actors wearing things that were not cringe or loud.

Do you know how much I suffered? With 3 language formulas? I had to learn Hindi, english, and telugu, I couldn't get good in telugu because I had to focus on hindi, the more I learnt one, the less I became good at the other because I was so uninterested in school
