First of all sorry for what happened and what you have to go through. Is injury in front of head or back or top? If front then tripping and falling is very likely but not the only way. If top then possible something fell on him? Eg someone threw something without looking and it fell on him? Did you go to the place where he fell and did you see any blood marks? Look for cctv cameras in near by houses and if yes then ask them to have a look?
