I myself haven't been on a date for a long time. But what I remember from my dating and relationship experiences that men don't like receiving flowers and scented candles. You're thinking about this date from a woman's POV. I also agree with rest of the guys that you're trying to hard and it may overwhelm him or make him feel that you're desperate.

I get that you're trying to be sweet to him, but don't ever do too much in the beginning of any relationship. It may come off as "love bombing". I have male friends and when I take their advice on how to approach a crush, they always say to take it slow and not to overwhelm the guy.

Take him out for a coffee or find out what he likes to eat and you can both enjoy that. If you do want to bring him a gift then maybe a funny t-shirt would do. Make him laugh and be easy going so that he feels comfortable. Get to know his likes and dislikes.

Also, as a caution, a lot of men use sob stories to reel in females. Pay attention to his story. Date him but don't make him feel that you're ready to be a rebound or someone who can fix him. Everyone should work on their own broken heart. I am doing that right now. I hope that helps.

I agree with your opinion. Beliefs and religious systems play a part, but I think hiding behind religious beliefs is not the only answer. Everyone's actions are accountable. The responsibility should lie with any government to raise awareness, make rules and implement scientific based solutions. It is also the responsibility of the citizens to take into account everyone's living standards and not just their own when they either protest or support any actions by the government.

For example, if any government cap and create a ticket based systems for such religious events, people will be quick to criticize it and the government might be removed in next elections.
