It's just part of the culture. And being conservative about the clothing doesn't translate to being a conservative culture overall. There's just a lot of differences in south and north indian culture, social environments and traditions , which is why it's hard to dig into. I personally had no issues with it, I was raised that way too. Because I know there's a lot more liberal outlook on intelligent, educated women and women who have out of the box ideas, as long as she's good at character, and the times when they do take a break from tradition here and there and lay back, I've noticed actually a lot less judgement and safety towards women. And a lot less aggressive attitude in general. There's more acceptance of being independent. But you are scolded and judged brutally if you wear "boldly" and you are mocked and people will assume you have "attitude" and all just from your look.
