In my opinion debt is the kryptonite of early stage startups. We have a revolving line of credit for practical purposes, but we do not take on any real debt ever. We will scale back or give up equity to avoid debt at all times.

In my experience this is a huge red flag for future investors and a huge chunk of all potential investors will immediately write off a company carrying debt. That is because they want to put their money toward the future of the company they are betting on (this the reason they are entering at that stage) not see their money poured into a debt hole that represents the company’s past.

The only way I would ever even consider this is if I felt the extra runway taken on by the debt could get me to a place where I didn’t need to raise anymore capital. And I would have to be damn sure.
