It's all marketing. All these popular sports owe their popularity to sponsorship and aggressive marketing.

Cricket clubs in India were established first in places of commerce and mercantile activities - Calcutta, Madras and Bombay and not Delhi, Lahore or Hyderabad.

The presence of a big business and merchants class benefitted this sport to a very large extent during its infancy in India.

And TV was a revolution for cricket. The small 1 min break between the two overs is a God sent opportunity for marketeers. They flooded the game with their money and then sold the game to the public.

5 mins to bowl one over and 1 min of break in between two overs - for every one hour of public watching cricket, they are watching 10-15 mins of tv advertisement. For an ODI match, people are watching close to 100 minutes of tv advertisements.

Such marketing potential is not there in most games.

1. Ik many people who call them "sami (swami)" or "mama"(traditional ones). Ooru side la "ayya" seems to be common along with "sami" itself, and sometimes "iyer". Rarer still, many stick to "anna". "Archakar/poosari/gurukkal" are the 'technically correct' words, imo, which is why I've seldom heard them used.

2. Simplest is to stick with "akka/ka". Or (non tamil) "sister/madam/excuseme".
