Marathi surnames are hardly informative about caste, unless they are "posts" or "titles", which easily points to the occupation class of one's ancestors. But South's case is different, southern SCs/LCs had supposedly derogatory and caste-based, not occupation based surnames, which meant that one could easily know the exact caste/subcaste/tribe they belonged to simply by their surname.

Surnames ending with -kar, -e, -le (typical marathi surnames) hardly tell you anything. Only surnames like jahgirdar, patil, sardesai, chitnis, joshi, shastri have any caste based information.
