    We opened up our economy to foreign trade in the 1700s as well, when the Mughal Emperor Farruksiyar granted a firman of trade to the East India Company. That led to 190 years of colonial rule.

    In 1978, our PM was Morarji Desai, a freedom fighter. A man who had read Poverty and Un-British Rule in India, been part of the Swadeshi movement, and personally led boycotts of foreign goods.

    Consider trying to convince THAT man to open up the economy to foreign investment, when he only saw the British leave India - and take their economic extortion with them - when he was 51 years old.

    After him came Indira Gandhi, whose father fought against foreign influence, and who as a seven year old wore khadi garments in 1924 and stood by Mahatma Gandhi's side during his fast for freedom.

    Expecting people deeply rooted in the culture of Swadeshi to allow foreign investment and free trade is unrealistic, at least.
