What did you wish to be and what are you doing with your life now?
In 2006, I wanted to do PhD in AI. After that, I wanted to be a professor at some university abroad. However, I couldn’t get into PhD in any of the colleges (because I was academically poor, and from architecture department rather than CS).
However, I joined industry in AI field. I chose good projects over good companies. With my experience and a few publications, I partly overcame my shortcomings of not having PhD in my dearest field.
The work I do is semi research (not full research though, as I would have wanted to) and I am a team lead where we have masters and PhD’s in AI working with me.
While this is far from satisfactory, I am still in the field I love dearly and I am thankful to my profs who made a man from a monkey. -

It sounds like you're stuck in the classic "invisible expert" trap—where skills aren't the issue, but positioning and visibility are. Since you’ve ruled out promotion, let's focus on other ways to attract work:
1. Leverage Warm Introductions – Instead of cold applications, reach out to past colleagues, managers, or clients. A simple "Hey, I’m freelancing now—know anyone who needs help?" can work wonders.
2. Niche Down Hard – "Full-stack engineer" is too broad. Specialize in something highly valuable (e.g., "MERN stack for AI-based SaaS," "CTO-for-hire for early-stage startups"). This makes referrals easier.
3. Demonstrate Thought Leadership – Share deep insights on Reddit, LinkedIn, or dev communities (not promoting, just discussing problems/solutions). Good content attracts the right people organically.
4. Be Discoverable in Hiring Channels – Update LinkedIn, AngelList, IndieHackers, and Toptal profiles with project-specific details. Many freelancers get inbound leads just by having a polished presence.
5. Target Underserved Markets – Big tech clients are competitive, but mid-sized businesses, non-tech founders, and agencies always need experienced devs who can "own the tech."
6. Productized Services – Instead of selling "custom development," package up fixed-scope offerings (e.g., "MVP in 30 days" or "Audit + Scaling Plan for Startups"). Easier to sell than hourly work.
7. Cold Outreach (But Smart) – Instead of applying on Upwork, DM startup founders on Twitter, IndieHackers, or YC Startup School with personalized solutions to their pain points.
8. Work for Equity (Smartly) – If cash gigs are slow, consider working with early-stage startups with strong potential (but vet them properly). This can lead to paid work or even a CTO role.
The frustration is real, but the key is shifting from "I can do everything" to "I solve X problem better than anyone." Find your edge and make sure people know about it—without "promoting" in a traditional way. -
What did you wish to be and what are you doing with your life now?
Exactly . Once I was apple for everybody's eye , and now people hate me .
Anyways , one should be able to pay his bills , have enough saving and a decent life partner . No aim for luxuries -
