do what you want....those updates at the very least help update security concerns and bugs....but regardless of platform, updates will always break something. You obviously have never used Windows, otherwise you'd know that Microsoft is notorious for this - they once crashed my entire computer because they did a crap update to .NET Framework (luckily I was able to resolve it). Apple has never had that serious of a problem because of an update, atleast in my experience. Have I had problems with an Apple update? Yeah, but ultimately I found out it was because of something third party installed or had a third party peripheral attached that didn't play nice with the update - not Apple's fault

Over time Apple has progressively hidden unixy directories they think most folks wouldn't know what to do and might get into trouble with.
