    This happens all the time!

    Good startup ideas often happen when the technology just becomes possible, or when society has just created a need for something. So it's not surprising at all when multiple startups have the same idea.

    First of all, it's extremely rare that the products are actually identical - usually they're satisfying the same need but they're quite different in the details. So that's usually one of the first ways to distinguish.

    But yeah, unless the market is saturated, 90% of the time you're not competing for their customers, you're both competing for the millions of potential customers that don't know either product exists yet. And having a competitor that's advertising that "this problem can be solved by a product" can actually help you, because now when people go searching for a product to solve that problem they will likely find your product too.

    I'm not sure what you mean by this. Most startups fail. Even with good ideas. Quite often startups fail despite having a great product, just due to poor execution.
