I don't think people from different religions should be forced to learn our sacred books. If the parents are so concerned, they can impart wisdom at home or sign their children up for classes. Additionally, the enforcement of a religious text as a school subject will only fan resentment against it.

Besides, our schools are barely keeping up with the current syllabus. NCERT cuts down essential topics every day because of politics, student performance, and teaching issues. Of we throw the Bhagvad Gita in there, it will receive the same treatment.

I'll add that the Bhagvad Gita is a *religious* text. When you make it cultural, you say it belongs to Indians rather than Hindus. And to reduce its divinity means that we'll end up with regular "fanworks" the way the West treats the Bible or the Egyptian or Greek pantheon of Gods. Have you seen the way so many of them discuss the characters? I kid you not, people write porn. They won't ascribe anything divine to it. I saw some madwoman call Krishna "fruity" online because he has a peacock feather on him. That's the crowd that will be exposed to the Gita.

Unless you're okay with people turning the events and conversations in the Gita into source material for raunchy and disrespectful crap, be careful what you wish for.
