I hope your wife understands that her father is a bad human being and her mother has been affected by stockholm syndrome and has gotten used to his abuse.

You should have reacted more calmly by iterating that since you have married your wife now, her father has no right to raise his voice against her let alone his hands to beat her.

My parents have a similar story about my mother's father trying to beat my mother and my father interjecting, but my grandfather picked up a silambu pole and tried to beat my father as well. He was only stopped by my uncles. My mother then resolved to never talk to him again for about 8 years till I was born and even after that they restricted communication with that man.

You either make him realize by explaining to him that nothing gives him the right to physically assault his wife and daughter. And make him realize his mistake by never talking to him again. But the problem is your wife and how she will take this.

One phone call from her father with his talking to her with trembling voice saying he regrets is actions is all it takes to make her believe in him again. But to him, the perpetrator, it just means he has succeeded in manipulating her.

Good luck on whatever comes next brother. Whatever happens try to have good communication with your wife and try to not lose you cool again. One moment of you slipping and acting rude will become fuel for them for decades.
