To share my meager understanding, I think curses and boons are more of promises than real thing. God can break it, everyone can not follow it but even Gods follow as they respect the one who gave boon/curse.

For example in my opinion, ravana could have been killed by Vishnu without taking any avatar but Vishnu respected the boon and took avatar in human form to respect the boon. Similarly any curse given to Gods do not bind them, it's just Gods respect and love the one who gave curse so they follow through it.

In current world, I don't think anyone has that command or respect for his/her words to be kept by Gods, let alone nature.
