Drop year during engineering. Honestly, in hindsight, everyone has gap years/drop years and they really don’t matter once you start working. But living with parents who treated it like the end of the world and treated me like an outcast or a leper or what, idk, made it so bad.

Thankfully after the year was over, I rejoined college, and got in touch with other classmates who had drop years. And they were/are actually the least toxic, most wholesome, helpful, and supportive people I’ve ever met. There was no competition between us, only collaboration. They weren’t the type that lied saying “I haven’t even opened my book” while being on the third revision. They studied a section of the syllabus, I studied another section, and then we taught each other and filled the gaps in knowledge. We thrived in that non judgmental space where we helped and understood each other. Our friendship and understanding was by no means perfect, but even after the differences in opinion, we would find our way back to each other. Their presence helped me get out of my dark phase, maybe we helped each other out. Finished final year with a distinction, which was unbelievable for the self esteem of the scared teenaged girl in me who had found out she would have a drop year.

Life happened, we lost a couple of them to their own paths over the years, but the rest of us are still quite close today, even 15 years later. I owe them my life, for I might’ve committed suicide if it wasn’t for them.
