Not sure about all the genetic stuff but culturally the parts of MH that share the border with Karnataka are culturally similar.

For example my father's native is in kolhapur district of MH very close to the karnataka border. He has a lot of extended family there and everyone on my father's side of the family can speak kannada. Most of the people in my father's village can speak kannada as well, probably can't read and write but can speak and understand.

My neighbour here in Mumbai is a mangalorean shetty and even tho their mother tongue is Tulu she can speak kannada as well and my dad can converse with them in kannada.

When my paternal grandmother was visiting us, this neighbour saw her and commented that her way of dressing and the jewellery reminded her of all the old ladies back from her own village. Nauvari (9 yard sarees), nath (it's nose jewellery), etc

Similarly recently I noticed that people from nanded and nearby places share a lot of culture with districts in telangana. My flatmate here in Hyderabad is from Telangana but can speak fluent marathi with a different dialect as he's village is closer to MH border.

Another example is konkani people having similar culture from the sindhudurg district of MH with north goan and north Karnataka (closer to the west coast) people.
