If you are working and traveling then stick to main cities like the cpaitals where you will get stable internet and transport. Most of the people in the capitals are used to people from outside so communication and day to day activities like shopping will not be a huge issue.

This way on the weekends you can roam around and comeback. When you get comfortable you can go further on the outskirts where many of the places in the pictures that inspired you will be found. Like in meghalaya the tourist spots are okay but the hidden gems are known to locals so you must get to know the people there. There you will get the true beauty of the North East.

So get use to the place and people, especially the food becuase most of the times it won't give you a choice.
