Have owned a TVS Apache 160 and a RE Thunderbird 500 for nearly 10 years. Got them in the space of a year but the Apache was rock solid. Their Service Centers are pathetic - didn't even screw the oil drain nut in well and I slipped in my own bike's oil. Just a few seconds before and I'd be dead. But it is pretty easy to find mechanics outside and the bike is very well built that it is a breeze to maintain. Parts are also cheap and easily available.
The RE has been an absolute disaster in terms of ownership. Never reliable, too many engineering flaws, even basic service activities needs too much effort and finding a mechanic willing to work on it was tough and a reliable one an absolute challenge. Felt like RE simply didn't care because they were selling bikes purely for the brand value but engineering wise - poor weight distribution, pathetic electricals quality and don't even get me started on the braking dynamics, their QC is also one of the worst. I have had so many of my friends with the same old issues with classics and the early continental too. I know the J-platform series bikes are supposedly better but I'm never buying an RE vehicle again and can't with good conscience recommend one either. Hoping new entrants like Triumph and Hero/Harley into the segment will mean better quality bikes.
