I am not an expert in GPS devices but I have one for my dog since I let him off leash. The main issue I have currently with it is the range limitation, which was the same problem I had when using airtags. So unless the device you're imagining uses more than Bluetooth, which I think has a 30m range for airtags, the problem persists.
As for something like an apple watch for kids, maybe I just can't visualize it for now but I can't image the "more fun" part at the moment that would make it extra appealing.

Why would I want something on my phone that I’ll likely never use. Sure there are things in iOS I’ve never used now but they don’t take up a substantial amount of disk space.

The ideal solution would be to hassle Apple to provide an alternate mechanism other than a second Mac. Not even Windows makes you do that. I wonder what Apple engineers are thinking sometimes 🤨
