Along with what u/gst-nrg1 suggested, I like using DaisyDisk to find where storage is filled.

I used to rely upon the Terminal `du` command, but DaisyDisk is fast and easy.

I used it just now, and it tells me I've got 262Gb of purgeable things in "hidden space" that are snapshots that are temporary system backups created by macOS. I could drag and drop them into a trash within the DaisyDisk app if I needed that space, but I've got 472Gb of my 1Tb internal SSD still completely free.
