I was in a similar situation with another family member in law. I realized after around 8 years that if my husband won't stand up for me then I will take matters into my own hand. While I never picked a fight I was very assertive and spoke my mind Needless to say, poop hit the fan ! There was a huge fight.Everyone in family and friends knew. Relationships were sour for an year before it got sorted out. I was called disrespectful, rude , bad choice etc.

But the incident made "don't phrack with me" very clear. It also forced my husband to be involved and poor chap came under the bus so many times. But hey ! If only he had stepped in much earlier.It also gave one full stress free year which was enough time for both parties to heal.

I really wouldn't recommend you to do this but always remember that your mental peace is very important. If not plucked at the roots, this person will attempt to control every aspect of your life. So perhaps you should have a talk with her. If she escalates to your husband you can let him know you have decided to solve the problem before it gets worse. If he picks a fight it shouldnt be a big deal because you both are fighting over the SIL anyways.
Let him know you spoke directly to the SIL to solve any misunderstandings because you don't want to ruin your relationship with him and keep having fights everyday.

Your SIL is probably is being disrespectful because she is trying to establish that she doesn't owe you anything because you sponsored her. In other words, her friends or family might have given her an impression that you are going to romp all over her because you "upgraded" her to the United States. Another possibility is that she is scared to step out anywhere in a foreign country, depends on you for everything and gets upset that you are not available 24/7.
