[M26] Why men’s compliment feels real?
In the Bhagvadgita Krishna tells Arjuna to perform deeds without expectation. To do good deeds then, and expect something in return is not really anything more than a transaction.
We men are seldom complimented. In fact we are more used to getting abused - either by parents for not doing well in exams or by bosses for not performing. The only time we get compliments, they are transactional- the sales guy or woman saying you look good in a shirt, so they can make the sale and be on their way. Or a woman saying something nice so she can sleep with you, or so you would buy something for her. Very seldom do men get told something without ever expecting something back in return.
What the lad on the train said to you struck you so hard because of its wholesomeness. There was no expectation. He didn’t want to sleep with you (I hope), he didn’t want any money from you. He knew he’d never see you again, but he said something purely to make you feel good.
I wish more of us could be like this pure soul, existing in the moment, relishing a fleeting conversation with a stranger and leaving them with a beautiful memory that they will carry with them for years.
You were blessed this day my friend. Relish it, and if you are able, and able to do it genuinely, pass it on. -
