It is possible to get backed on the strength of the pitch, if you have the right team.

For example, a bunch of people who were involved in the early creation of AI at e.g. OpenAI have spun out their own companies. Investors will give them money because of who they are, not because of what they've built. Equally, if you have an experienced team of 2nd or 3rd time founders, there will definitely be network you can tap into to raise money just on reputation.

Think about it this way. There is stuff that affects a raise, and where you are on the scale will make your life easier of harder.

1. Great team makes it easier, inexperienced team makes it harder

2. Great product makes it easier, early stage product makes it harder

3. Sexy sector makes it easier, unsexy sector makes it harder

4. Strong tractions signals makes it easier, limited to no traction signals make it harder

5. Pre-exising network makes it easier, no known investors / warm intros makes it harder

etc

If you are an early stage employee of OpenAI, now spinning off a product that you have already built, that is already being used by some fortune 500s, and you have a bunch of mates from university at big VCs ready to lead, then you will raise.

If you are John Smith, straight out of uni were you studied fine art and textiles, have a badly put together pitch deck for a sector that hasn't grown in 40 years, grew up in the outer Hebrides and don't know a single person that's not a fisherman, you will probably not raise.

In between these two ridiculous examples sits everyone else.

Yes, otherwise you wouldn't have Boom Supersonic, SpaceX or Tesla. It took them years to figure out if they actually have traction or not. In case of Boom Supersonic, they are still not sure if they are going to have traction. Same for Figma, it took them years to develop MVP.

Does it happen often? No. But it mostly happens with founders who have led previous companies to success. That or graduate from Harvard/MIT (being a dropout from those also works).

For all other cases you need to show some form of traction.
