I'd say it's a privilege if all you have is a lofty idea that sounds good and you raise a million dollars. It's meritocratic, though, if you raise a million from a company you built that's making great profit.

Let's say I'm a simple retail worker who develops an app that goes to the moon. Investors will hit you up, regardless of background...unless you're a known serial killer or something but then you have bigger problems to worry about.

But let's say you graduated from Yale and your dad is the CEO of x company and your founding partner is young but also a Yale graduate who went on to work for some fortune 500 company and now has a decent amount of domain expertise. And the entire time, you gracefully came up with a cool idea and nothing more. You didn't toil away or spend months or years building and cultivating the idea into a working theory aka a healthy business, then it's not unreasonable to see that person raise 200k-1 million, which makes it a privilege.

That's why I don't bother with raising money or going to YC because I recognize that money should be used as a tool, not as a required thing to check off a list and the last thing I want is to beg people who don't even understand the business I'm working in or what to do. I'd much rather make my own money and flip the bird to everyone else but that's me and the business I'm working in, which is low marginal cost...plus I'm a rebel at heart.
