    Is there any hope?

I am fairly new to the stock market. I dabbled in stocks when I was in college and managed a small portfolio of 1lakh from 45000 total investment spread across 3 years. I thought now for the long term I could invest in mutual funds. I chose 3 funds 1. HDFC midcap 2. Nippon india small cap 3. SBI contra. I chose these because eventhough small and mid caps are volatile, I can expect decent returns in the long term if I stay disciplined. I am very very confident I won't take the money out for atleast 5 years maybe even more. I planned a monthly sip program which automatically deducted money from my account. Now, based on all these posts on investing in small and midcap stocks, I find people here to have a very negative opinion for the next 4 years. While I know it is impossible to time the market and in the long term, we are bound to make a profit if we stay in the market, I am beginning to have some doubts regarding my funds portfolio. I am beginning to think I should have chosen an index fund. Can anyone point out if I have made a mistake in selecting funds or If I am just in FOMO because of seeing these analysis from the sub and I can wait with these funds for the longer term? Thanks in advance.
