Hedging Approaches

I primarily invest in stock markets through index funds/ ETFs. I conceptually understand that put options can be used to hedge against market downturns, but I was keen to know how folks do this in practice:: Specifically, any pointers around : - what % of your portfolio do you typically hedge using put options? - are these options usually short-term expiries? And if the market rises, do you allow them to expire worthless?
