What moment did buying PUTs eventually help you offset the risk of loss in an underlying stock in your portfolio?

Amateur investor here. I don't trade stocks nor have I traded derivatives yet. I'm wondering is it common practice for experienced folks to buy PUTs whenever you're about to make risky short-term investments in the underlying stock? Any anecdotes?
