How can I select better stocks for long term and short term?

I am new to trading and investing. Recently I started using Zerodha, but since I am new to this whole thing, I haven't got a clue on how to choose better stocks or how to know if the stocks I chose are going to perform better. This is why I need the help of people who are **experienced** or **somewhat experienced** in this field. The questions I have are: **LONG TERM:** 1. How to choose better stocks for the long term? (by long term, I mean 4-5 yrs) 2. How and what to research about the company to know how they perform currently and how they may perform in the long run to select the better stocks? 3. What are the things I should look for when buying a company's stocks after looking at the chart? 4. I have 85 companies on my watchlist but I can't study or research every company, so what should I do to narrow it down, and how to keep the best ones? **SHORT TERM:** 1. What should I look for in the charts when I buy stocks of companies for the short term? 2. How to choose better stocks? I don't want a vastly diversified portfolio. I want a decently diversified portfolio with good stocks for the long term and short term and I want to know how I can select them. sorry if there are any mistakes :)
