VC funding yes/no?

I'm looking for a co-founder and almost all of them are talking about external funding, accelerators and all kinds of ways to give up equity... I'm not really that keen on that and am more than happy to bootstrap. The question is, why are so many people obsessed with vc funding? Is it a brag to get some? what's wrong with having a startup that doesn't sell for billions?
